Just minutes after the Logan Grizzlies had completed a perfect 14-0 season with an 18-11 victory over East in the 4A State championship game on Nov. 18, senior quarterback DJ Nelson took exception to the tears flowing from the eyes of his teammate and little brother, Chase.
“Stop crying!” DJ yelled at his sophomore sibling. “Stop crying!”
But that’s when bigger brother stepped in and put Chase’s big brother in his place.
“What do you mean, ‘Stop crying?’” bellowed back Riley Nelson. “I’m crying!”
The starting quarterback at Brigham Young University for most of the 2011 season, Riley also happened to guide the Grizzlies to a state title in 2005 on the exact same field at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. And since Riley had basically been coaching him since he was seven years old, DJ had to listen one more time to his elder signal caller.
“I actually cried a little bit,” DJ admitted before adding, “but (Chase) was wailing, man. You can’t wail like that. Go ahead and shed a tear, but don’t be wailing.”
But while there might have been a little wailing on the Logan sideline after securing the seventh state football title in school history, at least there wasn’t any gnashing of teeth. And with just over two minutes left in the game, it sure looked like that might be the case.
Scarcely tested all season long, the powerhouse Grizzlies were trailing the big, hard-nosed Leopards, 11-10. Logan fans in the eastern stands were clearly stunned as they contemplated the possibility that their seemingly unstoppable path to a state championship might end up in disaster. But as it had all day, the Grizzly defense stood its ground when it mattered the most and forced East into punting the football.
